Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons are trained in both reconstructive surgery (to restore form or function) and aesthetic plastic surgery (to enhance appearance).
Reconstructive Plastic surgery is performed to improve function, but it may be done to restore appearance to normal. Some examples of problems that might need reconstructive plastic surgery include
- burns
- traumatic injuries and fractures, particularly to the facial bones and hands
- congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palates or cleft lips
- scarring from infection, disease or cancers that may affect function
Aesthetic Plastic surgery is usually performed on the face and head, breasts or skin to "enhance" cosmetic appearance. This may include treatment to restore normal appearance.
